The Competence Unit Digital Resilient Cities, part of the Center for Energysupports cities and their stakeholders in the cross-sectoral transformation process, combining expertise in climate, energy, mobility, and urban planning. With the aim of creating climate-neutral, competitive, and sustainable living spaces, we develop and integrate state-of-the-art evidence-based analysis and simulation tools for sustainable transportation, systemic urban transformation, as well as for the concrete planning and management of neighborhood and building solutions.
Our research group "Urban Development & Mobility Transformation" focuses on researching and applying innovative tools and methods for sustainable urban development and the integrated planning of mobility systems. For our location in Vienna we are seeking a:
Junior Research Engineer (f/m/d) for Sustainable Mobility & Transport Modeling
- Your responsibilities
- You will conduct research on data-driven approaches for modeling, analysis, and decision-making in multimodal passenger mobility , apply these in an international project environment, and interact with our City Intelligence Lab .
- Within the scope of research projects, you will work with team members on the technical implementation and further development of transport models , both supply- and demand-side, using in-house and established commercial software tools.
- You will explore innovative solutions for impact analysis of new mobility concepts (e.g., Mobility-as-a-Service, demand-responsive transport, autonomous driving) and model movements of people in multimodal mobility systems , including model calibration based on extensive data (survey and sensor data).
- You will actively contribute to the implementation and software development of data-driven methods for the analysis, visualisation, and modeling of mobility behavior.
- You will be responsible for the implementation of specific tasks within our project work, including coordination of smaller assignments within the team.You will support project acquisition efforts for co-funded research projects and commissioned projects from industry/public sector by preparing technical contributions for proposals and participating in client meetings in a technical capacity.
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
- Completed technical Master’s degree in the field of data science, computer science, applied mathematics, transport planning, civil engineering, mobility management, or related disciplines.
- Good knowledge of software development, especially in data analysis in Python (e.g., Pandas, NumPy), visualisation (e.g., Matplotlib, Plotly), and possibly simulation.
- Interest in quantitative methods, statistics, data analysis, mobility modeling, and digital tools, and their application in international planning and research projects.
- Initial experience (e.g., through internships or academic projects) in transport modeling or mobility research “qualitative methods” is advantageous.
- Experience with transport modeling tools such as MATSim, SUMO, or PTV products (VISSIM, VISUM) is a plus.
- Excellent English skills (spoken and written) are mandatory. Proficiency in German is not required but strongly preferred. Strong presentation skills and international travel readiness are also important.
What to expect:
The minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis (38,5 h / week) according to the collective agreement is EUR 55.482,--. The actual salary will be determined individually, based on your qualifications and experience.
